The Mamas and the Papas were a crucial part of the harmony-rich pop-group movement that swept Southern California in the Sixties. With their mix of male (John Phillips, Denny Doherty) and female (Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips) voices, astute songwriting and arrangements from Phillips and musical contributions from some of Los Angeles' finest session musicians, the Mamas and the Papas cut some of the most indelible and durable records of the sixties.

John Phillips had been active on the New York music scene since 1957. In 1962, he met Holly Michelle Gilliam who had come to New York to be a model. She started singing with John's group, The Journeymen and soon after, became his second wife.

Denny Doherty had been a member of The Halifax Three, which, after two albums for Epic, included future Lovin' Spoonful member Zal Yanovsky. Doherty and Yanovsky joined Cass Elliot and her first husband, Jim Hendricks to form Cass Elliot and the Big Three. The group later changed its name to the Mugwumps and went electric, with Art Stokes on drums and John Sebastian on harmonica. The Mugwumps recorded one album, which was not released until 1967, and broke up. Sebastian and Yanovsky formed The Lovin' Spoonful, Elliot fronted a jazz trio and Doherty joined John and Michelle Phillips as The New Journeymen.

The New Journeymen relocated to California, where they stayed with Elliot and Hendricks and Cass officially joined the group. Before landing their own recording contract, the quartet did some backing vocals for Barrie McGuire.

The group's first album, "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears", contained the timeless "California Dreamin'" and stands as a peak moment in the West Coast vocal-group sound.

A string of hit records followed:
Monday, Monday
Dedicated To The One I Love
Look Through My Window
I Call Your Name
Dream A Little Dream Of Me
Go Where You Wanna Go
I Saw Her Again Last Night
Words Of Love
Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon)
Dancing In The Street
Creeque Alley

Along with writing much of the Mamas and Papas' material, John Phillips also wrote a song that would be remembered as a sort of theme song of the flower power era in California. Scott McKenzie, an ex-Journeyman, scored a number 4 hit in the U.S. with "San Francisco" (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair). The Mamas and Papas also appeared at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which John Phillips helped to finance.

By 1968, the group was falling apart and decided to disband. John and Michelle were having marriage problems and divorced in 1970. John went on to record a solo LP and also co-produced the movie "Brewster McCloud". Michelle Phillips appeared in "The Last Movie" with actor Dennis Hopper, to whom she was later married for eight days.

Cass Elliot launched a successful solo career with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me". Her distinct voice had always emerged from the groups in which she sang. In 1969 she scored another hit single with "It's Getting Better" and 1970 yielded the hits "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "New World Coming." She also appeared in the film version of "Pufnstuf" and recorded an album with rock star Dave Mason.

The Mamas and Papas reunited briefly in 1971 to cut what they would later describe as 'a poor reunion album', "People Like Us", but disbanded again soon after.

Denny Doherty recorded two unsuccessful solo albums and Michelle Phillips resumed her acting career in the movie "Dillinger" and a movie bio of Rudolph Valentino.

Elliot had two prime time television specials of her own in 1969 and 1973, but most people remember her scores of television appearances throughout the early 1970's with Mike Douglas, Julie Andrews, Andy Williams, Johnny Cash, Red Skelton, Ed Sullivan, Tom Jones, Carol Burnett and others. She guest hosted The Tonight Show, had successful stints in Las Vegas and continued to record for RCA during these years. Cass had one daughter, Owen Vanessa in April 1967 but later divorced Jim Hendricks and married Baron Donald von Wiedenman in 1971.

In 1974, Cass travelled to England where she had a two week engagement at the London Palladium. After performing to sell-out audiences and basking in repeated ovations, Cass tragically succumbed to a heart attack on July 29, 1974, at the age of 33. She did not, as urban legend would have us believe, choke on a ham sandwich.

John Phillips had become idle by the mid 1970s, simply living off the royalties from his earlier work. He was arrested by U.S. narcotics agents on July 31st, 1980 and was sentenced to an eight year prison term, which was later reduced to 30 days. John then cleaned up his act and re-formed the Mamas and the Papas in 1982. The group included founding member Denny Doherty and two new "Mamas": John's daughter Mackenzie Phillips and Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, who'd sung with Spanky and Our Gang back in the sixties. By the mid nineties, Doherty was the sole member of the original group.

In 1998, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted The Mamas and The Papas. Cass Elliot's daughter Owen represented her mother and accepted her award.

On March 18, 2001, John Phillips, died of heart failure at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, at age 65, surrounded by family and friends. He had received a liver transplant several years before, after years of drug and alcohol abuse. Michelle Phillips told the TV show "Entertainment Tonight" that she and John had a chance to talk and ended their long time feud on his death bed. Denny Doherty was also among John's last visitors.

Just before his death, John recorded an album of new material. He had also completed a record he started over 25 years ago with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, entitled "Pay, Pack and Follow". He is survived by his wife Farnaz, daughters McKenzie, Chynna and Bijou, sons Jeffrey and Tamerlane, as well as step-daughters Atoosa and Sanaz.

Classic Rock and Roll lovers will always remember The Mamas and The Papas for their sweet harmony, tight arrangements and timeless melodys.

THE MAMAS

AND THE PAPAS

The Mamas and the Papas---
They are one of my favorite groups from the 1960s era, and this site seeks to give some information about them. Most everybody knows their signature song "California Dreamin’", but the total work of the Mamas and Papas is actually much broader and much, much more interesting than that song alone...

Stylistically, the overall sound of the Mamas and Papas remains true to their folk/folk rock origins, showcasing their playful approach to singing and their extremely imaginative harmonies. That does not mean that they do not have any variation in their songs, however. Indeed, their body of work includes everything from the sultry ballads that made Mama Cass so famous to the more psychedelic tunes of their final albums. They even covered quite a number of famous songs but changed them drastically to reflect their own style and approach to singing---thereby making them all their own.

Socially, the group epitomized everything that we have come to associate with the late 1960s. Their songs speak both to the social problems of the decade as well as describing the conflicting freedoms and insecurities of youth and music in their day. Indeed, the Mamas and Papas lived out the entire philosophy of the time---wild clothes, free love, recreational drugs, wanderlust, and an idealistic belief in their ability to overcome.

On this site, I’ve tried to compile a discography of their work as well as to tell a little bit about the members of the group before and after the surprisingly short Mamas and Papas phenomenon (they were only together from 1965-1968!). I’ve also included a few soundclips from my CD’s and a few links to related sites.

Since I started this site, I've come to discover that the Mamas and the Papas are not only one of my favorites, but are also the favorite of many people across the world. This site has grown a good deal since I started it, and I thank everyone for showing their interest and enthusiasm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mamas_And_The_Papas

The Mamas & the Papas

The Mamas & the Papas (credited as The Mama's and the Papa's on the debut album cover) were a leading vocal group of the 1960s. They were one of the few American groups to maintain widespread success during the British Invasion (others being The Beach Boys and The Lovin' Spoonful). The group recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968; releasing five albums and charting ten hit singles; while relatively a short time in the realm of popular music, some group members have pointed to their short time in the spotlight as a reason why they still have loyal fans today.

History

(As seen in the photo above) Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, John Phillips, and Michelle Phillips formed the group after several previous folk groups failed. They hit it big immediately after forming The Mamas & the Papas with California Dreamin', still their most recognizable and enduring song.

The name of the band was inspired by a daytime television talk show. Before the group recorded their debut album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, the band was known for a short time as "The Magic Circle." Wanting a name easier to remember, they were sitting around their house (which all four band members initially shared) brainstorming on a new name. Someone switched on the TV and a talk show was on with a Hells Angel. The first thing they heard was: "Now hold on there, Hoss. Some people call our women cheap, but we just call them our Mamas." Cass jumped up and exclaimed, "Yeah! I want to be a Mama!" Michelle chimed in that she wanted to be a "Mama" too. John and Denny looked at each other and John said, "Papas? Okay, problem solved." And the band had a new name.

In interviews, former band members confide that their recording sessions (and lifestyles) were usually heavily drug-laden, with large reserves of marijuana and other popular '60s drugs on hand. They even admit that their young children, also usually present at recording sessions, openly witnessed their drug activities.

The breakup of The Mamas & the Papas can be likened to that of Camelot: as infidelity destroyed King Arthur's kingdom, so did it tear apart the four members of the band. John Phillips had married Michelle Gilliam back on December 31, 1962, long before the formation of the band. Early on in the band's history, when they were still "The Magic Circle", Michelle and Doherty began an affair in 1965. They were able to keep it secret from the other two band members for quite some time. During a trip to Mexico, Denny revealed his affair to Elliot, who was furious (since she was secretly in love with Doherty). Soon afterwards, John Phillips caught Michelle and Doherty in the act and moved out of the house.

John could not stand to live with Michelle afterwards and so moved back in with Doherty. At this point Michelle fled into the arms of Gene Clark of The Byrds (friends and rivals of The Mamas & the Papas). After one concert where Michelle blew kisses to front-row-seated Clark, John said he could not stand to perform with Michelle any longer. Consulting both their attorney Abe Somer as well as their label Dunhill Records, the band then drafted a formal statement kicking Michelle out of the group in June 1966.

At this point they hired a new band member to replace Michelle, Jill Gibson, girlfriend of their producer Lou Adler. Gibson was already a singer/songwriter who had performed on several Jan and Dean albums. In fact, she had once been involved with Jan Berry for seven years before becoming romantically linked to Adler. Gibson was however not known as a strong singer, but learned to sing Michelle's parts within three weeks while the band was in London, England. Jill Gibson's vocals are featured on the band's second album The Mamas & the Papas, except for two tracks that include Michelle. Gibson's most important asset, however, was that she was a good replacement for Michelle: long blonde hair, slim figure, pretty face, good voice, etc. Shortly after recording and touring with Gibson, it became apparent that some fans were not happy with the substitution while others did not mind. Afterwards, largely due to John, the band reintroduced Michelle to the lineup in late August 1966. Gibson received an undisclosed lump sum for her part and later would admit to feeling betrayed by John Phillips.

Michelle and John reconciled and bought a home together in Bel Air, while the band tried to forge ahead. Things seemed fine for a while (at least they pretended they were). The group recorded their third album Deliver, which became a huge hit, and during this same time Denny was drinking heavily trying to forget Michelle. He still had a hard time seeing her back with John. Eventually the band closed the first ever Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967, but performed dismally. John Phillips organized the festival, and according to interviews with the members of the group, they were all so caught up in the festival they never got around to rehearsing. That, combined with Denny Doherty's last minute arrival from Canada, created an unmemorable performance.

The band tried to work on another album (to which they were contractually bound). After making no progress, they decided to take a trip in October of 1967, to Europe to spark their creativity. While in England at a party thrown by Dunhill Records, their record label, Elliot was talking to Mick Jagger. John approached them and made an insulting remark about her in front of the guests. Disgusted and humiliated, she stormed out of the party and quit the band. Their record company released a Greatest Hits compilation as a stopgap measure. Cass was contractually bound for the band's next LP, and therefore appeared on The Papas & the Mamas, the group's fourth album.

The band broke up in July 1968. In a rare interview, after the group's break up, with Rolling Stone magazine, Cass admitted she wanted to go solo and that this is what had caused the official break up of the band.

Cass Elliot started a very successful solo career and toured the U.S. and Europe. In reviewing their contracts, the record company decided the band owed them one more album. After about a year apart, the band regrouped and released their final album People Like Us in 1971.

While on tour, Elliot died of a heart attack on July 29, 1974 (not from choking on a sandwich, as is sometimes reported). John Phillips died of heart failure on March 18, 2001. Michelle Phillips went on to a successful acting career and Denny Doherty went on to host a popular variety show in Canada.

Legacy

John's eldest daughter, Mackenzie Phillips went on to act in George Lucas's hit film American Graffiti (1973) and in the successful TV series One Day at a Time. John and Michelle's daughter, Chynna, would go on to form the band Wilson Phillips along Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson (the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson), with whom she's been friends since infancy. John's youngest daughter, Bijou Phillips, is a successful actress and model.

The Mamas & the Papas were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.

In recent years, entirely new, succeeding incarnations of The Mamas & the Papas have toured small cities nationwide. But none of them have the spirit and impact of the original group that John Phillips helped to build.

Discography

Also many greatest hits packages have been released world-wide.
