国际母语日

International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. （国际母语日是一个纪念活动，它于每年的2月21日在世界范围内举行，旨在增强语言和文化多样性的意识和提倡多语制。）It was first announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. （1999年11月17日，它被联合国科教文组织正式予以公布。）Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.（它的庆祝活动也被联合国大会正式承认，在联大的决议中， 2008年被确定为国际语言年。）

International Mother Language Day originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952, when a number of University of Dhaka students were killed by the Pakistani police and army in Dhaka during Bengali Language Movement protests.（国际母语日肇始于语言运动日的国际承认，而自从1952年起，语言运动日在孟加拉国（前东巴基斯坦）已开始被纪念，其时，在孟加拉语言运动的抗议中，许多达卡大学的学生被巴基斯坦警察和在达卡的军队所杀害。）

The Linguapax Prize is presented annually on International Mother Language Day.

UNESCO sets the theme for each International Mother Language Day and holds related events at its headquarters in Paris on or around 21 February each year.

In 2008, the International Year of Languages was formally launched on International Mother Language Day.
