The Maonan language is a Kam-Sui language spoken mainly in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, Hechi, northern Guangxi by the Maonan people.
毛南语属侗水语支, 主要为广西北部河池市环江毛南族自治县的毛南族所使用。

Approximately half of all Maonan people are capable of speaking Maonan.（所有毛南人当中，大约一半人能说毛南语。） In addition to this, many Maonan also speak Chinese or Zhuang. （除了能说毛南语，许多毛南人也能说汉语或壮语。） About 1/3 of all people who self-identify as Maonan are concentrated in the southern Guizhou province. （在自己确认为毛南族的所有人当中，大约三分之一的人聚居在贵州省的南部。）They speak a mutually unintelligible dialect commonly called Yanghuang, which is more common known as the Then language in Western literature. （他们说一种相互间难以交流的方言，通称为佯僙[扬黄]话，即西方文献里较为大家所熟知的“Then Language”。） The Maonan do not have a writing system. （毛南语没有文字书写系统。）

Maonan is a tonal language with 8 tones (Lu 2008:90–91), featuring an SVO clause construction (Lu 2008:169). （毛南语是有8个调的声调语言[陆天桥《毛南语语法》2008:90–91]，具有S[主语]V[动词]O[宾语]句子结构的特征[陆天桥《毛南语语法》2008:169]。）For example, man (he/she) shoot (drink) ka:u (wine) "He/She drinks wine", man (he/she) ba:i (go) hə (market) "He/She goes to the market", etc.（例句如，man [他/她] shoot [喝)]ka:u [酒] “他/她喝酒”； man [他/她] ba:i [去] hə (市场) “他/她赶圩”， 等等。

Maonan displays a head-first modification structure, i.e. the modifier occurring after the modifier (Lu 2008:170). （毛南语有着中心词在前的修饰结构，即修饰成分出现在中心词的后面。[陆天桥《毛南语语法》2008:170]。）For example, ka:u (wine) hulia:ng (broomcorn) "broomcorn wine", mu (pig) la:u (big) "big pig", nok (bird) vin (fly) "flying bird", among others. （比如，ka:u [酒] hulia:ng [高粱]“高粱酒”； mu [猪] la:u [大] “大猪”；nok [鸟] vin [飞]，“飞鸟”, 等等。） Occasionally, a head-final modification structure is also possible with the involvement of a possessive particle (P.P.) di, e.g. ya:n (house/family) nda:u (we/our) di (P.P.) bo (buffalo) "Our family's buffalo" (cf. the more common bo ya:n nda:u) (ibid. pp173–174).（有时，在所有格词“di”介入的情况下，中心词在后的修饰结构也会出现，举例来说，ya:n [房子/家庭] nda:u [我们/我们的] di (P.P.) bo [牛]，“我们家的牛” ，[比较常见的 bo ya:n nda:u][出处同上，pp173–174]。）
