桃金娘科红千层(Callistemon brachyandrus)属常绿花灌木，原产澳大利亚。在澳大利亚的植物园内可长成高2~3米、冠幅3~4米的灌木；在自然状态下可形成4×4米的冠幅。叶色墨绿，质地稍硬，针形叶，秋季变成红褐色，长1.5~4厘米，宽1毫米，叶背散布一些油状腺点。幼苗的叶非常柔软且具毛，和成熟的针状叶很不同，这种灌木独有的特征是非常吸引人的。花红色，穗状花序呈圆柱形顶生于枝头，长6~10厘米；聚集的雄蕊是花序最显眼的部分，暗红色的花丝上着生金黄色的花药，就像撒满了金色的粉末；花瓣萼片5，与雌蕊合生；花期6月。蒴果，扁球形，木质化，直径5~7厘米，含多数细小的种子。
 针叶红千层生长速度适中，可在排水不良处正常生长，既耐潮湿，也耐干燥的立地条件。性喜光，在全光照，排水性好、疏松肥沃的土壤条件下生长良好。花后需略微修剪，剪去已谢的花絮，并进行整形，通常修剪成圆球形，使植株更强壮、美观。较耐低温和霜冻，可抗近-10℃低温。易移栽，除冬季其余季节都可进行，为提高移栽成活率，需带土球和适当修剪。高温期间移栽后，要及时搭棚遮荫，并及时浇水。
 针叶红千层用种子繁殖。种子成熟后，及时采摘木质化的果实，放入纸袋内。果实充分干燥后会裂开，散出种子。将纸袋放在有阳光的干燥环境下，可加快得到种子的时间。扦插也可作为一种繁殖手段应用于生产。
 针叶红千层的红色花丝像一撮撮毛刷，整个花序像一把红色的洗刷瓶子的刷子，因此又被称为瓶刷花。其果实在枝头一串一串就像串好的铜钱，而同属植物的叶子则与柳叶相似，所以也叫串钱柳。针叶红千层可在景观绿化工程中应用，其松针一样的叶子很是特别，就像一株灌木形的小松树盆景。它在百花争艳后的夏季里独自开放，同时又可吸引蜜蜂和鸟儿，是一种非常优秀的景观植物。可应用于公园、校园、庭院、小区、别墅等场所进行单植、列植和群植美化，也可作为绿篱或观赏花灌木进行园林配置，还可盆栽进行室内摆设，或制作盆景等。
